One of my favorite things to do in a new city is wander. We are always armed with a map so we can eventually find our way back to our accommodation. We have found some hidden gems while wandering—things we would have never seen had we just followed the most direct route between sites.
While in Budapest, we spent an afternoon exploring the city. We had no set objectives or sites planned. Our only success criteria was to see whatever crossed our path. One of the fun finds of the day was a square containing an interactive fountain. We spent a few minutes playing at the fountain and trying to figure out how to control the water streams. For a few minutes, I returned to a younger, more child-like version of myself, playing in the water and commanding the fountains. And for that reason alone, our afternoon of site seeing was a success!
Finding the Interactive Fountain in Budapest
If you’re in Budapest and want to find your youth, the fountain is located southeast of the Parliament in Freedom Square (Szabadság tér). Just start wandering and you’ll find it.

Looks like a nice sunny day. Did you get your feet wet?
We did not get wet at all! It’s a cool fountain…when you approach it, the water stops! It’s deceiving, as you have to get pretty close before it will stop.
